Arthur Newton was the finest ultra-runner of his generation, despite a late start to his running career, and turned to coaching later to share the wisdom he had found through self-experimentation. Like Arthur Lydiard, Newton had very little existing knowledge to go by in trying to find the necessary endurance to compete at the highest level but arrived at stunningly similar conclusions as he worked away on his small farm in South Rhodesia.
The laws of training that Newton outlined are principles we still employ in our coaching today and Newton, like Lydiard after him, emphasized the need to build a strong endurance foundation above all else. His methods and insights into keeping the mind free of tension while running, is one we employ in our coaching model as well.
So for all this, we have to include the great Arthur Newton in our pantheon of master coaches to which we pay homage on this site. We recently reviewed the second book published on the life and times of Arthur Newton “Running for the Lives” (the earlier publication is called “Tea with Mr. Newton”).
