“Yes I tried the Lydiard Marathon programme for the purpose of building a base. I had no intention of actually running a marathon off it ( I was aiming for an ultra at the time and just needed mileage). But I did feel at the end of my base training that I’d love to have been in a position to continue with the training programme and finish a marathon. I never felt stronger.

The programme I used consisted of 8 weeks base building. What I found most beneficial from it was that it built up nice and slowly in small chunks. No individual run was too long, yet during each week the programme incorporated 3 longish runs. For example by week 8, I was doing a 130 min, a 95 min, and a 105 min. Each of the runs was set at a different average pace, and this I found great to distract from any boredom, it also put my HR Monitor to good use.

In-between these longish runs there was a fartlek, an out & back run, and 2 nice short jogs. For the ‘out & back’, I basically done a pace run at a slightly quicker pace than advised.

Overall I found that the training gave me great strength and stamina and was the perfect base to lead into good anaerobic sessions.

One drawback that the programme had was the amount of time required, especially when you have 3 longish runs every week. Most other programmes would only have one long run per week. But hey, if you sign up to it you gotta make some sacrifices!!”
